In the park

Hi all,
It’s Monday and what fantastic weather we are having in London today.  Makes a change!!!  Yesterday I took Toby to the park quite late, about 7pm, and I was amazed at how many other dogs were there.  Anyway, I have just come back from taking Toby for his morning walk in the park and it occurred to me that almost every dog was walking in front of it’s owner.
I was speaking to a chap who has a long coated German Shepherd and he was telling me what a good dog he has and you know what, I don’t believe him.  It is very obvious, especially when you see them from a distance, that the dog has even less respect for it’s owner than I do.  I saw him trying to walk his dog on a lead and when he gets home he must be really exhausted because his dog was pulling him all over the place.  There are loads of dogs who pull, in fact my first dog tried to pull me.  Of course I was not going to allow that although I admit it was a little easier for me as Millie was a Westie and not a German Shepherd!  However, the principles are the same.  Here is something, which everyone can do and it is my first piece of dog training advice - NEVER let your dog walk in front of you.  Almost all dogs would rather be a follower.  I promise you that they will thank you for it, because they will be better-balanced and happier dogs.  More next time.  Got to go.  Bye for now.

My Very First Post

Hi everyone.
This is my very first post and I hope that it is a good one.
This blog is about training your dog and it really came about because of all the bad advice which I have been given over the years, particularly from the “professionals” whom I paid to help me. Had I known then what I know now, we would have been able to give our lovely Westie Millie a more peaceful and balanced life with us.  She seemed to hate other dogs and travelling in the car and no one was able to give us a solution.  We rescued her from “oldies.org” but we only had her for seventeen months as she had a brain tumour, but in the short space of time we had her, she gave so much to us and we still miss her very much.
In this blog our intention is to pass on some information, which we have which has really helped us with our current Westie Toby, who we rescued from the Cairn and Small Terrier Rescue Centre.  This is a fantastic organisation which does so much good for the dogs in their care.  We also hope that we might be able to learn from you so, if you have any tips. we would love to hear them or any funny anecdotes.
The other thing I will do is provide some links to interesting doggy things and training aids, which may be of interest to you.
So this is my first post. The next one will probably be tomorrow so bye for now.
